Creating a positive personal and social environment
In Chapter 6, we considered person-centred philosophies at the broader organisational level but if staff are not supported to implement these, then person-centred care might not always be enacted in practice (Moyle et al., 2013b). In Chapter 5, we explored the role of teams and the importance of team leadership to facilitate a relationship-based approach to care. Leadership through role modelling relationship-based approaches to care promoted a critical mass of staff with shared values resulting in a team that delivered consistent care (Brown Wilson, 2009). These relationship-based approaches to dementia care begin with the biography of the person. Listening to and integrating these stories into everyday care routines is the first step in developing personal and responsive relationships (Brown Wilson et al., 2009). Positive relationships enable staff to value the stories being shared and thus adopt a biographical approach to care. The next step in supporting people living with dementia is to understand how their biography contributes to their behaviour. We often believe we understand the life history of a person by knowing their marital or partnership status, their employment history, where they have lived and their family connections. However, in a small practice development project I was involved with, it was increasingly evident that keeping knowledge at this level was insufficient to implement person-centred care. Activity 7.1 is designed to support you in understanding what these aspects of a person’s biography mean for the person with dementia.
